In a significant move, the Iranian parliament has approved a measure to enhance and broaden the scope of the Organization of Defensive Innovation and Research, commonly known as SPND, within the Defense Ministry. This decision, which was previously under the stewardship of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh, the mastermind behind the regime’s nuclear program before his assassination, marks a pivotal step in the Iranian regime’s defense strategy.

Abolfazl Amouee, the spokesperson for the Parliamentary Security Commission, emphasized the urgency of this initiative, stating, “The purpose of establishing this organization is essential to ensure that we can achieve advancements in the face of emerging and evolving threats and technologies in the defense and security domains worldwide. Today, competition among nations in technology has become a strategic imperative, and in pursuit of this strategy, every country invests the necessary capital to stay at the forefront of this technology. Some of these technologies are disruptive technologies, while others enhance our ability to counter enemy threats. For example, in this organization, scientists are working in areas such as laser technology, nuclear defense, as well as topics like electromagnetism and acoustics, presenting their achievements to the country’s defense sector.”

SPND, also referred to as the Defense Innovation and Research Organization operates under the auspices of the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Support. Its mandate encompasses research and development initiatives aimed at bolstering the regime’s nuclear weapons program.

This decision comes amidst the Iranian regime’s ongoing efforts to bolster its outward image, particularly as it grapples with the repercussions of its regional warmongering and destabilizing activities. Additionally, it aims to uplift the declining morale of its internal forces within the country and its proxy forces abroad.

It is worth noting that on October 16, 2020, the Office of the National Council of Resistance of Iran in the United States disclosed the activities of the SPND, revealing the existence of a new atomic center in Sorkheh-Hessar and the continuous activities of SPND, which reportedly aim to achieve the capability to produce part of an atomic bomb.
