Beginning 2022, Albania has become a member of the UN Security Council for a two-years term.

After the UN General Assembly 175-strong vote on Albania’s membership in the Security Council on June 11, 2021, Prime Minister Edi Rama said at a ceremony: “Albania will not occupy just one seat in the Security Commission. Rather, it will proceed with priorities in the program to enrich its values. This issue will focus primarily on gender equality issues. Albania is among the top 10 countries in the world in terms of gender equality in government. We are convinced that women and girls are one of the long-term investments for lasting peace in our societies.” (Source: Top Channel: July 6, 2021)

The US representative to the UN congratulated Albania on the start of its tenure at the Security Council, and the Albanian ambassador to the UN wrote on Twitter that “membership in the Security Council places a great responsibility on us and we will play our part in global challenges”.
