“Iran-backed forces numbering 30,000 detonated their positions and fled without a fight against just 350 opposition fighters,” Russian President Vladimir Putin stated during his annual press conference on December 19, as reported by Vedomosti on December 20, 2024. The Russian president’s disclosure sheds light on the dramatic collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s government in Syria, an event that has exposed the vulnerabilities of Iran’s regional strategy.
According to Vedomosti, Putin described the fall of Aleppo as the turning point in Syria’s civil conflict, where opposition forces advanced swiftly, encountering little resistance from government troops and their Iranian-backed allies. “This was the pattern across Syria,” Putin added, emphasizing the disorganized retreat of pro-Assad forces.
The defeat triggered a large-scale evacuation coordinated by Russia, which moved 4,000 pro-Iranian militia fighters from Syria to Tehran after the collapse of Damascus. The Russian outlet highlighted that this retreat marks a significant blow to Tehran’s ambitions in the region. “In Assad, Moscow and Tehran lost a key strategic ally,” noted Vladimir Sazhin, a senior researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences Institute of Oriental Studies, in Vedomosti.

Domestically, the Iranian clerical regime faces escalating challenges as public discontent grows over economic mismanagement and political stagnation. Vedomosti reported that the regime’s external failures are amplifying domestic unrest, creating a dual-front crisis that exposes the fragility of Iran’s leadership.
The revelations from Vedomosti highlight the multifaceted weaknesses of the Iranian regime. From the rapid fall of Assad’s government to the retreat of Iran-backed forces, Tehran’s capacity to project power in the region appears significantly diminished. The regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has struggled to construct new narratives portraying strength, attempting to prevent his already low-morale followers from recognizing the systemic vulnerabilities within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). However, even some of his allies are now openly exposing his failures, further undermining the regime’s narratives.
