Calling for the visit of an international investigation mission to Iran’s prisons and investigation into the death of Mehran Akrami
Mehran Akrami, a 32-year-old prisoner of the 2022 uprising, lost his life on March 12, 2024, as a result of brutal torture at the Intelligence detention center in Saqqez. He had achieved third place in international Taekwondo competitions. Mehran, who had been arrested during the uprising in November 2022 and detained at the Intelligence detention center in Saqqez, was severely beaten by prison guards last week and was transferred to the hospital due to kidney failure. However, he was returned to the detention center before recovering and lost his life there.

Mehran Ebrahimi’s body was buried by his family on Thursday, March 14, in a heavily secured environment and the presence of intelligence agents, in his hometown of Takab. The signs of torture were clearly visible on Mehran’s body. He had fractures on his back, severe injuries on his eyebrows and head, and bleeding from his nose, ears, and mouth.

In another development on March 15, security forces prevented the families of some of the political prisoners executed in the 1988 massacre from entering Khavaran Cemetery. They wanted to visit the graves of their loved ones on the last Friday of the Iranian year 1402, according to tradition.

Furthermore, between February 17 and March 12, 2024, at least 11 prisoners committed suicide due to severe pressure and brutal harassment by prison guards. Shahin Galehdari, Amir Shahbazi, Hassan Omarpour, and Ashkan Osmannejad in Urmia Prison, Mohammad Zeinaldini and Abdolsamad Rigi in Zahedan Prison, Mohammad Komail Zandkhani in Ilam Prison, Hossein Jalali in Shiraz Prison, Mosayyeb Reisi Yeganeh in Evin, Soheil Haqbin in Lakan Prison in Rasht, and Ahmad Kurd Bacheh in Khorin Prison.

The Iranian Resistance demands an independent international investigation into the circumstances of Mehran Akrami’s death and once again emphasizes the necessity of a visit by an international fact-finding mission to Iranian prisons and meeting with prisoners, especially political prisoners.
