At least 1500 protesters are confirmed to have been killed in the recent crackdown on the Iran protests, the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI or MEK) announced over the weekend. The group, also known as the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), released the names of 504 slain protesters.

The MEK said at least 400 protesters have been killed in Tehran Province, another 320 in Kermanshah, 270 in Fars, 240 in Khuzestan, 120 in Isfahan, and 100 in Alborz (Karaj).

The National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI) said on Sunday that according to eyewitnesses, hundreds of bodies were taken to Namazi hospital in Shiraz during the uprising; however, these are not included in the opposition’s most recent death toll and are being investigated.

Human rights group Amnesty International said on Monday, December 16, 2019, that Iran’s authorities are carrying out a “vicious crackdown” following the outbreak of nationwide protests on 15 November, “arresting thousands of protesters as well as journalists, human rights defenders, and students to stop them from speaking out about Iran’s ruthless repression.”

The London-based human rights group said it has carried out interviews with dozens of people inside Iran who described how, in the days and weeks during and following the protests, the Iranian authorities have held detainees incommunicado and subjected them to enforced disappearance, torture, and other ill-treatment.

“Harrowing testimony from eyewitnesses suggests that, almost immediately after the Iranian authorities massacred hundreds of those participating in nationwide protests, they went on to orchestrate a wide-scale clampdown designed to instill fear and prevent anyone from speaking out about what happened,” said Philip Luther, Middle East and North Africa Research Director at Amnesty International.

Credible sources have informed Amnesty International that in Raja’i Shahr prison in Karaj, Alborz province, hundreds of detainees, including children, were brought in trucks to the prison, the rights group said. “They say that handcuffed and blindfolded detainees have been punched, kicked, flogged and beaten with batons by security forces on a daily basis.”

“Video footage verified by Amnesty’s Digital Verification Corps, backed up by witness testimony, shows Iranian security forces opening fire on unarmed protesters who did not pose any imminent risk. The majority of the deaths that the organization has recorded occurred as a result of gunshots to the head, heart, neck and other vital organs indicating that the security forces were shooting to kill.”

United States Special Representative for Iran Brian Hook announced earlier this month that Iranian security forces may have killed more than 1,000 people since protests over gasoline price hikes began in mid-November.

“As the truth is trickling out of Iran, it appears the regime could have murdered over a thousand Iranian citizens since the protests began,” Ambassador Hook told reporters at a briefing at the U.S. State Department on December 5.

The Iranian regime has remained silent and is trying to conceal the facts. One month after the nationwide uprising, the clerical regime, fearing the domestic and international consequences of its crime against humanity, is doing its utmost to hide the number of martyrs and their names as well as the number of those arrested and imprisoned. The suppressive forces refuse to hand over the bodies of those killed to their families. Many of those martyred were snatched from hospitals or streets and buried in unknown locations.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), said the regime still refuses to hand over the bodies of the martyrs and brazenly demands their families pay for the bullets with which it murdered their children. This shocking crime is undoubtedly one of the most horrific crimes of the 21st century and by any measure amounts to a manifest case of crimes against humanity, she noted, underscoring that the international community must banish the religious fascism ruling Iran.

Mrs. Rajavi called on the United Nations Security Council and the European Union to take urgent action to stop the crackdown in Iran and crime against humanity and secure the release of those arrested. She again urged the UN to establish an international fact-finding mission to investigate this major crime and visit the regime’s prisons and the prisoners.
