More than a month after the Iranian people’s nationwide uprising, widespread arrests continue in Iran. State-run news agency, Mehr, quoted Ali Akbar Javidan, State Security Force (SSF) Commander in Kermanshah Province, as saying on December 19, 2019, “More than 250 leaders of last month’s riots, mostly 20 to 35 years old, who confessed having links with terrorist grouplets and enemies of the revolution, have been arrested.”
Previously, Heydar Abbaszadeh, SSF Commander in Khuzestan Province, had reported 145 and 136 arrests of protesters on December 4 and 13, respectively, who, in his words, “were the main instigators and leaders of the unrest in Khuzestan Province.”
The actual number of those arrested in the uprising is more than 12,000. The clerical regime, fearing the internal and international consequences of its crime against humanity, is doing its utmost to prevent the disclosure of the numbers and names of those killed and arrested and where the latter is being held.

Many of the detainees are under brutal torture to force them to make televised confessions. The bodies of many of those tortured to death have been dumped into rivers and dams.
Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, the President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), has repeatedly called on the United Nations to dispatch a fact-finding mission to Iran to visit those arrested. Absent such monitoring, the Iranian regime will have free reins to continue its atrocities.

Today, with a near-unanimous vote, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for the unconditional release of those detained during the uprising and informing their families of where they are being held, as well as access to them by lawyers and international observers. The resolution also called on the UN to launch an investigation into the crackdown of the Iranian people without delay. The European Union and its member states, five of which are members of the Security
Council and 10 of which are members of the Human Rights Council, must undertake urgent steps to implement such monitoring.
