At dawn on Monday, March 30, 2026, the clerical regime’s executioners in a barbaric act hanged two members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), Akbar (Shahrokh) Daneshvarkar and Mohammad Taghavi at Ghezel Hesar Prison.

Slain PMOI member, Mohammad Taghavi, 59, was a long-standing political prisoner with a history of persecution dating back to the 1980s and 1990s. He was previously arrested in 2020 on charges of affiliation with the PMOI and spent three years in prison before his release. He was re-arrested in March 2024.

Akbar Daneshvarkar, 58, a civil engineer, was arrested in January 2024.

Both prisoners were subjected to savage torture in the notorious Ward 209 of Evin Prison. In December 2024, Branch 26 of the Tehran “Revolutionary Court”, presided over by the notorious “judge” Iman Afshari, sentenced both men to death on charges of “baghi” (armed rebellion) for their membership in the PMOI. The sentence was subsequently confirmed by the regime’s Supreme Court.

Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, President-elect of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, stated that the desperate regime, in fear of the popular uprising that would uproot it, by resorting to this grave crime desperately tries to postpone the explosion of the people’s rage, but it would only intensify the resolve of Iran’s rebellious youth and the fighters of the National Liberation Army to overthrow this regime.

Mrs. Rajavi paid tribute to both martyrs, who remained steadfast under torture, pressure, and threats, honoring their commitment to their people and their cause to the end.

Mrs. Rajavi further stated that the clerical regime is attempting to exploit the external war to conceal its deep and unresolvable internal crises, but that it cannot escape its inevitable overthrow at the hands of the Iranian people and their organized resistance.

Mrs. Rajavi called on the United Nations and all member states to unequivocally condemn this savage crime, stating that verbal condemnation is no longer sufficient. The time for concrete and effective action has arrived. The international community’s inaction has only emboldened this bloodthirsty regime to carry out further executions and crimes. A significant number of the PMOI members and political prisoners currently remain on death row. Immediate action must be taken to save their lives.
