Iran News: Protests Across Iran as Retirees and Merchants Voice Grievances

Today, Monday, May 5, retirees and pensioners from the Social Security Organization took to the streets in various cities across Iran, expressing their discontent with the current economic and social conditions.

In Shush, located in the southwest of Iran, retirees gathered in protest, demanding higher pensions and addressing issues such as poverty, corruption, inflation, and discrimination. Chants of “The bankrupt government is the enemy of retirees” echoed through the streets as protesters voiced their frustrations.

Meanwhile, in Kermanshah, in the western part of the country, retirees of the Social Security Organization held a similar protest, emphasizing their demand for increased pensions and calling for the release of imprisoned activists, including a teacher.

In Tehran, the capital city, retirees once again rallied outside the headquarters of the Social Security Organization, reiterating their demands for higher pensions in accordance with existing laws.

Simultaneously, in Shiraz, in the south of Iran, gold bazaar merchants went on strike, opposing recent tax laws that they argue are threatening their livelihoods. Truck drivers in Shiraz also joined the strike, protesting fuel shortages and the high cost of living.

In Tabriz, located in the northwest, fruit sellers held a demonstration outside the municipality, denouncing discriminatory policies and poor working and living conditions. Banners waved high, bearing slogans such as “Our problems will go away if there is less embezzlement.”

Further south, in Bandar Abbas, bazaar merchants also went on strike, expressing their dissatisfaction with the increased taxes imposed by the government.

The protests highlight the widespread discontent among various segments of Iranian society, ranging from retirees and pensioners to merchants and workers, all demanding economic relief and an improvement in their living standards. As tensions continue to escalate, authorities are faced with mounting pressure to address the grievances of the protesting citizens or face the consequences of their negligence.
