In a candid discussion with Stuttgarter Zeitung, Dr. Alejo Vidal-Quadras, former Vice President of the European Parliament, issued a compelling call for Germany to reassess its diplomatic stance toward the clerical regime in Iran. Following a recent trip to Germany where he engaged with members of the Bundestag, the former EP Vice President emphasized the pressing need for a tougher approach towards the Tehran regime.

Dr. Vidal-Quadras’s visit to Germany comes in the wake of a chilling incident that saw him targeted in an assassination attempt last November. Dutch authorities recently apprehended a suspect believed to have been involved in orchestrating the attack, which Dr. Vidal-Quadras narrowly survived. Tracing the origins of this heinous act back to Tehran, Vidal-Quadras underscored his long-standing criticism of the Iranian regime and his support for the Iranian Resistance movement.

During the interview which was published on May 2, Dr. Vidal-Quadras minced no words in addressing what he sees as a critical flaw in Western diplomacy: a failure to recognize the regime’s exploitation of perceived weaknesses. He highlighted Germany’s pivotal role in a decades-long policy of appeasement towards Tehran, urging a decisive shift in approach given the regime’s egregious human rights violations, nuclear ambitions, and aggressive foreign policies.

The conversation delved into the West’s apprehension over Tehran’s multifaceted threats, including terror activities in Europe and hostage-taking. Dr. Vidal-Quadras proposed a multifaceted strategy involving heightened international pressure and robust support for the Iranian Resistance, particularly the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), under the leadership of Mrs. Maryam Rajavi. Emphasizing the pivotal role of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in sustaining the regime, the former European Parliament VP advocated for their designation as a terrorist organization across Europe to curtail their activities.

Despite these urgent calls for action, the German outlet lamented the reluctance of German authorities to embrace tougher measures. It cited the recent rejection of proposals in the Bundestag aimed at expanding EU sanctions on Iran and listing the IRGC as evidence of inertia in the face of growing threats.

The interview underscores the need for a recalibration of European policy towards Tehran, with Dr. Vidal-Quadras’s impassioned plea serving as a clarion call for Germany and its allies to confront the Tehran regime’s belligerence head-on.
