Urgent Call to Athletes and Sports Organizations to Take Action for the Cancellation of the Death Sentence of Political Prisoner Mohammad Javad Vafa’i, Boxing Champion of Mashhad Clubs

The NCRI Sport Committee calls upon all athletes and sports organizations to condemn the criminal death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafa’i Thani, the boxing champion of Mashhad clubs and urges immediate intervention to save his life.

The oppressive and criminal government of the mullahs once again plans a crime against one of Iran’s sports champions. On Wednesday, July 19, the criminal judge of Mashhad’s Vakilabad Prison confirmed the death sentence of Mohammad Javad Vafa’i Thani, the boxing champion of Mashhad clubs and a political prisoner affiliated with the MEK. He was charged with “spreading corruption on Earth,” a charge for which the Iranian people have already condemned Supreme Leader Khamenei and all regime officials, calling for their overthrow.

Mohammad Javad Vafa’i Thani was arrested following the 2019 uprising and has endured severe torture under the regime’s brutal rule. After the announcement of the criminal death sentence, he was secretly transferred to an undisclosed location.

The NCRI Sport Committee, while appreciating everyone who has risen against the execution of Mr. Vafa’i, calls upon all international sports organizations, human rights defenders, and sports bodies to take urgent action to save his life.
