On Tuesday, September 30, 2025, political prisoner Mehdi Vafaei Sani, 37 years old and held in Ward 7 of Evin Prison, was summoned under the pretext of a family visit. However, before reaching the visitation hall, agents of the Ministry of Intelligence forced him into a vehicle and took him to an unknown location.
Mehdi was arrested on June 8, 2022, in Parand, Tehran, and transferred to Evin Prison. He was sentenced to six years in prison on charges of “propaganda against the regime” and “assembly and collusion” due to his connection with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK). During the Evin Prison fire on October 15, 2022, he was shot by regime agents and injured.
Mehdi’s mother, Mrs. Shiva Esmaeili, a political prisoner held in Qarchak Prison, was arrested in Tehran in March 2023 and transferred to Ward 209 of Evin. She was sentenced to ten years in prison on charges of “assembly and collusion” and “propaganda against the regime.” Mehdi’s cousin, Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani, is also imprisoned in Vakilabad Prison in Mashhad and has been sentenced to death on charges of membership in the PMOI.
The Iranian Resistance calls for urgent action by the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Human Rights Council, the UN Special Rapporteur, and other relevant UN bodies to ascertain the fate of Mehdi Vafaei, protect his life, and secure the freedom of all political prisoners.
