A senior Iraqi politician has condemned the assault on Camp Ashraf which occurred on the orders of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and the Iranian regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
In a statement on Sunday, Dr. Zafer al-Ani of the Iraqiya list said the attack violates the Fourth Geneva Convention and urged a retreat of the assailing forces.
“The intrusion of a large armed force into Camp Ashraf, which is the residence of members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK), clearly violates international conventions and human rights,” the statement said.
He said the assault taints Iraq’s image, depicting it as a country that does not respect international law, including the Fourth Geneva Convention.
“There is absolutely no justification for such military actions except the fulfillment of the plans of the Iranian regime against Ashraf,” the statement added.
Dr. al-Ani called for a pull back of the armed forces from Ashraf and urged the United Nations to protect the residents of the camp.
