NCRI – Republican U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham said he intends to put forward a measure that would mandate more sanctions on Iranian regime, aimed at forcing the regime to dismantle its nuclear weapons program.
Graham said Hassan Rouhani would have to comply with four separate preconditions in order to avoid a new round of crippling sanctions: Stop enriching uranium and other nuclear materials; dismantle centrifuges used in nuclear production; halt the plutonium-producing reactor; and place its fuel cycle under international control, CNN reported. “You have a regime that is lying about what they’re trying to do. They’re trying to build a nuclear weapon. For 30 years they’ve been terrorizing the region and the world,” Graham said.
Democratic Senator Robert Menendez, Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee also urged negotiators on Sunday to stick to the deal put forward by the U.N. Security Council, which calls for Iran to cease all enrichment and accept stricter protocols on inspection and oversight of its nuclear facilities.
A move away from this position, Menendez said, suggests “we seem to want the deal almost more than the Iranians. And you can’t want the deal more than the Iranians, especially when the Iranians are on the ropes.”
