NCRI’s U.S. Representative, Ms. Soona Samsami, spoke about the various aspects of the uprising, underscoring that it marked a turning point in the struggle to overthrow the ruling theocracy in Iran. She added that the mullahs’ regime was facing an impasse and the crisis of overthrow, and, therefore, has found the only recourse in suppression and killings. By ordering the ruthless killing of the protesters, Khamenei had expedited the process of his regime’s overthrow, Ms. Samsami said, noting that Hassan Rouhani also put aside his election-time moderate posturing and called for the suppression of the people.”This is the common tactic of Khamenei, Rouhani and other regime leaders. They are all sitting together in a sinking ship.”

Her remarks were followed by a short video clip of the uprising in different Iranian cities.

In concluding her remarks, Ms. Samsami recalled the main points articulated by the NCRI’s President-elect Mrs. Maryam Rajavi, in which she had said,

The crimes carried out by the Iranian regime against our people are by any measure crimes against humanity. World governments and the international community should demand an immediate halt to the killings and arrests.
The UNSC must declare the leaders of the regime as criminals committing crimes against humanity. They must face justice for this massive suppression and bloodshed.
The international community must also strongly condemn the mullahs’ internet terrorism and assist the people of Iran in circumventing this blockade.
The clerical regime is making every effort and using all means to conceal the actual number of the martyrs. The United Nations must immediately dispatch fact-finding missions to Iran to investigate the number of those killed, injured and imprisoned.

Deputy Director of NCRI’s US office, Alireza Jafarzadeh, explained that the speed with which the protests expanded to various cities, all with common political slogans defying the whole regime, revealed the potential of Iranian society for regime change.

“The behavior prevalent among protesters had radicalized in the extreme,” Jafarzadeh said.

“During the 2017 uprising, there were only 50 attacks on regime centers. This time, it seems that thousands of regime-affiliated buildings were targeted.”

Suppressive measures used in the event were also not comparable to those employed during the uprisings of 2009 and 2017, he said.

One aspect unique to the uprising was the immediate intervention by the regime’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Jafarzadeh said. He announced that the regime would not retreat from the gas price hike while ordering his forces to brutally suppress the protests.

Jafarzadeh pointed to the growing influence of MEK resistance units in the current uprising compared to their role in 2017, when they were “in their infancy and just beginning their endeavors.”

Another important aspect according to the NCRI was that the current uprising erupted just as the regime had to deal with major blows to its meddling in Iraq and Lebanon, which the regime considers its “strategic depth.”

Jafarzadeh concluded that a strategy of “Resistance units and rebellious cities” announced by the Resistance’s leader several years before the 2017 uprising has proven its efficacy and legitimacy. The protests have demonstrated not only the desire of the Iranian people for change but also a strong manifestation that the firm US policy on Iran, including the imposition of sanctions, has not rallied people behind the regime. The protests show that people’s anger is directed at the regime as solely responsible for their suffering.

The NCRI urged investigative missions to be sent to Iran to evaluate the scope of the crimes and examine the cases of those killed, wounded and/or detained
