Iraqi Protesters Attack Iranian Consulate in Holy City of Karbala

On the evening of November 3, over 1000 young Iraqi protesters attacked the Iranian regime’s consulate in the holy city of Karbala. The protesters torched the wall outside of the consulate and then placed an Iraqi flag on the wall around the consulate.
Iraqi security forces shot dead three protesters and wounded 19 to disperse the protesters. More than 250 people have been killed since the protests first erupted early last month.
In another incident as a sign of growing anger over Tehran’s involvement in the country’s affairs, the Iraqi protesters in the holy city of Najaf changed the name of the main street from “Khomeini” (the Iranian regime’s former supreme leader) to “October revolution.”

The protesters have increasingly directed their anger at the Iranian regime, and one of the main demands of the protesters is the expulsion of the Iranian regime and its proxy militias from Iraq. The protesters’ anger at the Iranian regime and the Iran-backed government of Iraq has been covered by international media.
“More than 250 people have been killed since the protests first erupted early last month. Security forces in Baghdad have fired tear gas, rubber bullets to keep protesters from breaching barricades on two main bridges heading to the heavily-fortified Green Zone, where the government is headquartered. In southern Iraq, protesters have attacked offices linked to Iran-backed political parties and militias, setting fire to some of them”, the Associated Press reported.

Anger against Iran’s regime has escalated, particularly in the southern provinces where Tehran has the most influence. Karbala—one of the world’s main Shiite pilgrimage sites—holds enormous importance for Iran’s regime.
“Iraqi protesters last year torched the Iranian consulate in Basra in a similar attack, although the protests that triggered it was smaller,” The Wall Street Journal reported, adding: “The rage against Iran has been fueled by allegations by human-rights groups that paramilitary groups backed by Tehran have killed and abducted protesters as part of a crackdown by security forces that has killed more than 250 people since the protests started.”
Protesters in Karbala last week carried banners reading, “Iran is the reason for the catastrophe.”
“In the Shiite holy city of Karbala, south of Baghdad, dozens of protesters on Sunday also attacked the Iranian consulate, scaling the building’s concrete barriers and replacing the Iranian flag with an Iraqi flag,” AFP reported.
