Germany’s Chancellor Merkel: There’s ‘Strong Evidence’ Iran Regime Carried out Tanker Attacks

By Mahmoud Hakamian

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said there is “strong evidence” supporting a U.S. accusation that the Iranian regime was behind last week’s attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman.

“We of course take these explanations very seriously,

and there is strong evidence,” Chancellor Merkel said at a news conference Tuesday after talks with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in Berlin.

“But that does not prevent me from saying that we must do everything to solve the conflict with Iran in a peaceful way,” Merkel said.

“It is a very serious situation,” she said, adding that Germany is in “the closest contact” with the U.S.

Reacting to the Iranian regime’s announcement Monday that it would breach its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal, Chancellor Merkel said: “We are pushing for Iran to keep to (the nuclear pact) – if that is not the case, there will of course be consequences.”

The Pentagon on Monday released new photos and a timeline of the tanker attacks that have heightened tensions between Washington and Tehran.

United Kingdom officials have said it is “almost certain” that Iran’s regime was responsible for the attacks. U.S. President Donald Trump said last week that “Iran did it.”
