The Iranian regime’s Supreme Leader has visited the religious city of Qom for the sixth time in three months to diffuse crises within his regime and to mend his waning authority.
According to state-run news agencies on Thursday, the mullahs’ Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei visited Mesbah Yazdi, one of his loyal mullahs. Also present in the meeting were Yazdi’s wife and other family members.
It was also reported that Khamenei met with mullah Ansari Shirazi.
Observers attribute Khamenei’s recurring visits to Qom to his attempts to deflect deepening crises at the top of the regime’s hierarchy as well as to repair his position as the regime’s highest authority, which was badly dented during the 2009 mass uprisings.
