Iran, September 30, 2019—The visit to the United Nations General Assembly by Iranian regime President Hassan Rouhani has raised major concerns and aggravated further divisions within the mullahs’ apparatus.

With regional and international crises escalating for Tehran, the European powers, Britain, France and Germany, went the distance in encouraging Rouhani to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump on the UNGA sidelines. Rouhani’s refusal shed further light on Tehran’s inability to launch new talks with the U.S., knowing the grave consequences for the mullahs’ regime as a whole.

To add insult to injury, supporters of the Iranian opposition People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) launched massive “No to Rouhani” rallies outside the UN, expressing their protest to Rouhani’s presence in New York and demanding the expulsion of the mullahs’ delegation from New York.

“Now that we have returned empty-handed from the UN General Assembly, we should come to understand that despite sending invitations to our Arab neighbors, including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain, they have all turned us down. Hatred against us has especially increased following the recent attack on Saudi oil facilities,” a September 29 article from the state-run Mardom Salari newspaper reads in part.

Abdulreza Farajirad, former Iranian regime ambassador to the UN’s European headquarters, referred to the Europeans distancing from the mullahs’ regime. “If Europe continues this path and the U.S. refuses to lift sanctions… there will be no nuclear deal left… and we have to accept the fact that the nuts and bolts of the JCPOA have loosened and is on the brink of complete collapse,” he said, referring to the 2015 nuclear deal using the common acronym, JCPOA, or the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action.

Ghassem Mohebali, former director general of the regime’s Foreign Ministry, also expressed concerns in this regard. “With the Europeans exiting the JCPOA, the state will be facing far more complicated circumstances in regard to foreign policy and the economy. Our options will be far fewer. Therefore, the state should reach some kind of mutual understanding with the Europeans,” he wrote.

The Kayhan daily, known as the mouthpiece of Iranian regime Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, added an interesting input into this entire ordeal for Tehran. “Whenever it is ripe to make the Americans and Europeans pay for their actions, there is a specific current inside the country that provides support for the U.S. and Europe… and currently, they are paving the path for new negotiations with the U.S. to sacrifice our regional and missile capabilities this time around,” the article reads in part.

“The question is are the U.S.’ obstructions in issuing visas to the Islamic Republic’s delegation, the European’s rude statement, and not permitting [Iranian regime Foreign Minister] Mohammad Javad Zarif to visit [Majid Takht-Ravanchi, the Iranian regime Ambassador to the UN], signs of decreasing tension and readiness for talks?” the piece continued, showing further signs of growing internal disputes among regime officials.

Mohammad Ali Abtahi, close to the Rouhani faction, acknowledged the UN visit failure and wrote, “I wish Rouhani had not gone on this visit.”

“A new meeting with [French President Emmanuel] Macron and even the British Prime Minister and German Chancellor placed a heavy burden on Rouhani’s shoulders. In this visit, Europe, and especially France, changed the issue at hand to a meeting between Rouhani and Trump, while putting aside the French initiative,” he wrote in the state-run Sharq daily, referring to an initiative launched by Paris to provide $15 billion to Tehran in return for the mullahs’ return to abiding by the JCPOA after recent violations.

“Everyone was under the influence of this propaganda that the entire world is campaigning for a meeting between Trump and Rouhani to resolve all problems, and that [Iran] is not accepting these circumstances. This was not in our interests… Rouhani’s visit to New York this year, at the climax of maximum pressure from U.S. sanctions, meant that Tehran was seeking negotiations, and yet those talks were not in our interests,” he added.
