Iran, October 14, 2019—On Sunday, students of Tehran’s Amir Kabir University held a demonstration in the Farabi campus in protest to the policies of the university’s administration and illegal costs imposed by university managers. Despite hours of protest and sit-in by the students, the authorities of the university refrained from responding to their demands.

The students were chanting, “Students! Support us” and “Shame on the university’s security.”

The issue of tuition fees has been a constant source of tension and protests in different universities across Iran. According to the regime’s own laws, the government is supposed to support students and help pay for the costs of their studies.

But in the past years, the regime has been gradually declining this support and forcing students and their families to pay for their fees. Given the current economic situation, this puts more pressure on families and pushes more and more students to drop out of university.

Also, with the lack of services and utilities in Iran’s universities, the education terms of many students are delayed. Government officials admit that in many cases, delays cause the education period of students to last longer than it should. Due to this delay, the students are eventually removed from the government support plan while they still have several years of studies left.

Meanwhile, the regime is also giving advantages and more opportunities for students who can pay their way into university. This favors government-affiliated people who are richer and have better ties to university authorities.

The protests of the students of Amir Kabir University take place against the backdrop of a general decline across Iran’s entire education system. The country faces a major shortage of teachers and schools at the beginning of the academic year. Labor children, high school dropouts and unemployed university graduates are becoming more and more common in different Iranian cities. The regime’s own authorities and agencies report about millions of child laborers that have been deprived of the most basic education due to high costs and poor economic conditions.

Moreover, the poor condition of facilities at schools and universities are causing even more troubles and hardships for the educating population of the country. Last year, a malfunctioning brake caused a bus from Azad University to veer off the ledge of a cliff and kill several students. Lack of proper maintenance and funding for the school's transportation caused the incident. In the underprivileged areas of Iran, fire incidents regularly kill school children.

While Iran’s schools and their students are lacking minimum services, the regime is spending huge amounts on building schools and facilities in neighboring countries to strengthen its clout and open pathways to meddle in their affairs and export its fundamentalist ideology.
